Engines

A heat engine converts heat energy to mechanical energy or work.

In the simplest engines, cyclic processes are used, so ΔU = 0

Efficiency is given by work out divided by heat energy in:

and engines can never be 100% efficient.

There are two important idealised engines – the Otto cycle and the Carnot cycle.
